Advocacy Key Asks

  • Intensify budget advocacy for Increased allocation of FP resources

Ministry of Health in partnership with AHBN and advocates should meaningfully influence public spending on health to improve wellbeing of the population. Through diverse and concerted efforts, can advance and embed improvements in health budget allocation, spending, transparency, participation and accountability to increase overall health and wellbeing of Africans.

  • Follow the money allocated annually for Family Planning

To know what the Government of Nigeria truly prioritizes, we must follow the money. Government officials always vocalize support for women’s health every day including FP, but without committed financial backing, they won’t get results. Money is needed to buy commodities, train staff and support clinics and health workers. Saying family planning is a priority isn’t enough. How do citizens know that a government fulfilled its commitment? If partners conduct budget advocacy for FP resources allocated annually, it will be easy to assess how money has been dedicated to either FP commodities or programs, how much of this was actually spent as planned, and whether this was done efficiently by the FMoH or local governments.

  • Scale-up uptake of DMPA-SC

DMPA-SC was approved and included on the Essential Medicines List in 2018 following its initial pilot. Continued efforts are needed to scale up the provision in 26 states for public and private sector provision, including approval by the Pharmaceutical Council of Nigeria to add it on the Approved Patent Medicines List, state-level adoption of the national rollout plan, product procurement, and trainings to enable community health extension workers, private patent medicine vendors, and community pharmacists to provide DMPA-SC across the country.
