Ensure sustainable financing for the National Family Planning program

Nigerian Government committed to ensure sustainable financing for the National Family Planning program by allocating US$4mil annually from 2017 to 2020 for procurement of contraceptive for the public sector. However, $1,639,344.26 was allocated in 2018, this fall short of the target of $4million by $ 2,360,655.74 that needs to be raised in the period (January-June 2019). Had filled a case in the high court of Tanzania in collaboration with Equality Now

In collaboration with Equality Now had filled a case in the high court of Tanzania. The petition appealed the validity of the section of marriage act, 1971 which provides that; 1. No person shall marry who, being male has not attained the apparent age of eighteen (18) years, or being female, has not attained the apparent age of fifteen (15) years. Further to over two (2) years court proceeding, the court ruled in favor of complainants. The Government was therefore provided with a one year period to review the law accordingly by extending the marriage age to 18 years.

As part of ensuring men are well engaged and involved in family planning, nearly 1,150+ husband and partners who have high influence over young women’s health decisions gained information during home visits in Shinyanga.
